DOT & Non-DOT Physical Testing

DOT physical (Department of Transportation physical) is a health examination required by the Department of Transportation for all commercially licensed drivers, helping determine if a driver is physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a commercial vehicle. The results will either qualify or disqualify drivers from acquiring or renewing their CDL.

DOT Disqualifying Medical Conditions

DOT disqualifying health conditions may force truckers off the road, but these conditions may not be a permanent obstacle for the driver or your business. Understanding the criteria, the function of the medical examiner, and when discretion may be allowed in deciding whether or not to provide certification will help keep your business working at full speed.

While a complete list of disqualifying conditions would be hard to fit into one page, we wanted to outline some of the main ones that are encountered:

Important Information Employers Should Know

  • A national registered medical examiner, like Dr. Luz Castillo, can administer a DOT physical

  • If your drivers will operate a vehicle across any state line, they are required to have a DOT physical beforehand

  • If you employ drivers from different states, you are subject to the physical qualification regulations of that specific state
